Thanks to RSS feed technology, it's very easy to move an existing podcast to ART19 from another host platform. If you are a current customer and interested in moving your podcast to ART19, feel free to reach out to support@art19.com for assistance. If you are not a current customer, you can reach out to hello@art19.com to discuss setting up an account.
Here are some important FAQs and steps for the migration process:
Pre-Migration FAQs:
-
Are you currently running dynamic ads?
If so, they will be baked into episodes if not turned off or if an ad-free version isn’t provided by your current host platform. -
Are you using embedded players?
If so, be sure to replace with ART19 players. This can be done after the redirect but before cancelling the account on the old host. ART19 can help generate a list of episode codes - just reach out to support@art19.com to get this process started. -
Have you downloaded/plan to download historical stats?
Stats aren’t included in the import, so be sure to save a record before cancelling the account on the old host. -
If known, what measurement type was the old host using?
If you move to a more conservative measure on ART19 (i.e. IABv2.1) it may be perceived as a drop in downloads.
Import Steps:
-
Provide ART19 with a (dynamic ad free) RSS URL via the New Series Request Form.
-
ART19 will import your show and invite specified users to the profile.
-
Check that imported show notes look good (i.e. that formatting wasn’t stripped, episode numbers looks right, etc).
-
If the show used dynamic ad insertion (DAI) and would like to import Ad Insertion Points (AIPs), you can ask your old host for an export of these timestamps, then use the Bulk AIP Update Feature to import them into ART19.
-
Best practice: If the redirect will not be placed for a few weeks after import, leave the ART19 profile inactive to avoid feed-crawlers picking it up (i.e. Google, causing a possible duplicate). Be sure to re-activate before setting the redirect.
Steps for Redirect:
-
Check that all episodes are on ART19. If new episodes were published on the old host platform since initial import, request that ART19 refreshed the import.
-
Set 301 redirect on old host platform to the new ART19 RSS feed: Here are redirect instructions for different host platforms.
-
Best practice: The only thing to keep in mind is that once the redirect is set, you must publish on ART19. It is nice to avoid redirects with a hard or tight deadline. We suggest placing it a few days before your next planned episode to give yourself time to check over things and get familiar with using ART19. Anything can be edited in ART19 after the redirect.
Post-Redirect Steps:
-
It can take up to 24h for all listening apps to update to the new feed, but immediately after the redirect is placed, all calls to the old feed will redirect to the ART19 feed. If possible, check apps once something new has been added to the ART19 feed. You can also manually check the feed in individual apps or look at the Browser data in the stats page on ART19. Notable apps worth checking, as sometimes the redirect is not acknowledged:
-
TuneIn
-
Spotify
-
-
Before cancelling your account on the old host platform, be sure you have replaced any embed players and downloaded stats.
