Once you have exported your Bulk AIP template, this article explains what each column means and which ones you can edit before re-importing.
Primary Feed imports
The CSV template export includes 10 columns (there may be more, depending on the number of marker priorities per AIP), 5 of which are editable for the import:
- episode_id: Not editable
- episode_guid: Not editable
- unique_content_id: Not editable
- episode_title: Not editable
- release_date: Not editable
- position_type: Editable. Accepted values are preroll, midroll, and postroll. You can have up to 7 prerolls, 7 midrolls, and 7 postrolls per episode.
- start_position: Editable. Acceptable formats are total seconds (SSSSS.00) or timestamp (HH:MM:SS.00). For postrolls, you can use “end” to place the start position at the end of the episode. The template uses total seconds by default. See How do I format timestamps and total seconds for Bulk AIP? for help.
- max_ads: Editable. You can choose 1-5 maximum ads at each marker point. Use whole numbers.
- max_duration: Editable. You can choose 1-900 seconds of maximum duration for each marker point. Use whole numbers.
- priority_1: Editable. Configures one or many marker priorities to target specific campaigns, brands, ads, live reads, spots, or any combination. There can be a priority 1, 2, 3, and so on, depending on how many priorities you use. See How do I target specific campaigns with Bulk AIP priorities?
Leaving markers unchanged keeps them. If you clear the marker settings cells for an episode's AIP, the marker is removed on import (see How do I add or remove AIPs in bulk?). If you want existing markers to remain unchanged, leave them as they are in the export sheet.
Similarly, if you delete some marker rows for an episode and leave others, the deleted rows are removed from the episode. However, removing all marker rows for an episode makes no changes to that episode's markers.
For example, if an episode has a preroll, midroll, and postroll and you only want to modify the midroll: leave the preroll and postroll rows in the template unchanged and edit the midroll row. If you delete the preroll and postroll rows, those markers will be deleted from the episode.
Alternate feed imports
The template exported from an alternate feed page includes one additional editable column: inherit_from_primary. If the episode is linked to the Primary Feed, this column shows a “Y” and the episode inherits any changes made to the Primary Feed. If not, the field is blank.
To make bulk AIP updates to episodes that are inheriting from primary, delete the “Y” in inherit_from_primary and add the marker information (position_type, start_position, max_ads, max_duration). To relink an alternate feed episode to the Primary Feed, delete that marker information and add a “Y” back to inherit_from_primary.
Note: If your feed has dynamic ads disabled, no ads will insert into the feed whether AIPs exist or not.
Common questions
My ad isn't delivering on some episodes. Could my AIP settings be the cause? Yes, this is one of the most common causes of ad delivery failure. The most likely culprit is Max Duration (max_duration) being set too low for the ad creative. For example, if your mid-roll Max Duration is 60 seconds and the ad is 90 seconds, the ad will not insert at all. ART19 never truncates an ad: if the full creative can't fit within the Max Duration window, it simply won't play. Fix: export your CSV template, update the max_duration column for the affected episodes (we recommend at least 180 seconds for mid-rolls to give headroom for longer creatives), and re-import. For a full delivery troubleshooting checklist, see Why Isn't My Line Item Delivering?
I need to update my mid-roll duration across my entire back catalogue. Do I have to do this episode by episode? No, this is exactly what the tool is for. Export your template, filter to the midroll rows in the position_type column, update the max_duration value for all of them, and re-import. The tool updates every episode in one go.
I've just migrated from another host and some episodes have too many ads per marker. How do I fix this in bulk? Export your template to see the current state of all markers. Check the max_ads column: if episodes show 4 ads per marker when you only want 2, update that column across all affected rows and re-import. You can standardize your max_duration values at the same time.
I only want to update the mid-roll on some episodes, but each episode also has a pre-roll and post-roll. Will editing just the mid-roll rows affect the others? Only if you delete the pre-roll and post-roll rows from the CSV. If you leave those rows unchanged and only modify the mid-roll rows, the pre-roll and post-roll markers remain exactly as they are. Do not delete rows you don't want to change.
