ART19 automatically generates closed captions, or transcripts, for the video you upload, so your content meets accessibility requirements across the platforms it's distributed to. You don't need to turn anything on - captions are created from your video's audio after you upload it. You can also edit the generated captions or replace them with your own.
How it works
After you upload a video to an episode, ART19 generates closed captions from the spoken audio automatically. You'll see a confirmation letting you know automated captions are being generated for your video. In the ART19 editor these appear in the Video Transcripts section of the episode's Video Upload area.
Captions are usually ready a few minutes after the upload finishes - typically 5 to 10 minutes, but longer for longer videos. Once they're ready, the captions are delivered alongside your video wherever it's distributed.
Editing the automatically generated captions
If you only need to make small changes - correcting a name or a word that was misheard, for example - you can download the generated caption file, edit it, and upload it back, instead of starting from scratch.
- Open the episode and find the Video Transcripts row in the Video Upload section.
- Click Actions and choose Download Transcripts. The file downloads as an SRT.
- Open the file in any text editor or caption tool, make your changes, and save it (keep it in SRT format).
- Next, click Upload Custom and select your edited file. It replaces the automatically generated captions for that video.
- Once uploaded, to revert back to the auto-generated captions click Remove Custom.
Uploading your own captions
If you'd prefer to use your own captions from the start, click Upload Custom, then select your SRT file. It replaces the automatically generated captions. You can Remove Custom at any time.
When captions aren't generated automatically
ART19 won't generate automatic captions in two cases:
- Videos longer than 4 hours
- Videos with no spoken words
If either applies and you need captions, upload your own caption file using the steps above.
Closed captions and Apple Podcasts transcripts
These automated closed captions are separate from the transcript that Apple Podcasts generates for your episode. They do not replace or change Apple’s transcript. If you want to edit the transcript shown in Apple Podcasts, that is done in Apple Podcasts Connect rather than in ART19. (If you'd like to override Apple Podcasts transcripts from within ART19, please contact support to register your interest in this feature.)
