HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) is a streaming protocol that delivers content in small segments rather than as a single file. Unlike a traditional MP3 download, which is always a single audio file, HLS can deliver video, audio, or both.
An HLS Download is counted when at least 60 seconds of distinct content has been streamed to a consumer, deduplicated within a 24-hour window. This follows the same measurement rules as MP3 downloads, applied to streaming delivery.
HLS Downloads include audio-only content. Any content delivered through HLS streaming counts, whether it was video and audio or audio only. Today, audio-only consumption makes up a portion of HLS delivery.
We call the metric "HLS Downloads" rather than "Video Downloads" or "Video Views" because HLS is a delivery mechanism, not a content type. Calling it "video" would imply all HLS consumption is video, which is not accurate. A video-specific breakdown within HLS Downloads is planned for a future update.
