ART19 does not currently support native chapter functionality for episodes. If you are interested in this feature, please Contact Support and we can add your name to the feature request list.
Using Timecodes as a Workaround
While ART19 does not support chapters directly, you can add timecodes to your episode description. Some listening platforms will recognise these timecodes and convert them into clickable chapter markers for your listeners.
How to add timecodes:
Simply include the timecode in plain text within your episode description, followed by a chapter title. Accepted formats include:
MM:SSHH:MM:SS
Example:
00:00 Introduction
05:30 Interview begins
22:15 Listener Q&A
45:00 Wrap-up
Tips:
- Start your first chapter at00:00for best compatibility
- Include at least three chapters for platforms to recognise the format
- Avoid using emojis or HTML in chapter titles
- One punctuation mark between the timestamp and title is acceptable (e.g.00:00 - Introductionor(00:00) Introduction)
Platform Support
Timecode chapter support varies by listening platform:
| Platform | Chapter support? |
Apple Podcasts |
✅ Supported (iOS 18 and later) — timecodes in episode descriptions are converted to clickable chapter markers |
Spotify |
✅ Supported — timecodes in episode descriptions are recognised and displayed as chapters |
YouTube |
✅ Supported |
Other apps |
Varies — many podcast apps will display the timecodes as plain text even if they don't render them as interactive chapters |
Note: Platform support can change over time. We recommend checking the support documentation for each platform directly if you need the most up-to-date information.
Important Limitation: Dynamic Ads and Timecodes
If your show uses dynamic ad insertion, timecodes in your episode description will not align correctly for listeners.
Here's why: ART19 dynamically inserts ads into your episode at playback. However, listening apps have no way to separate the ad content from the episode content when calculating playback position. This means:
- A timecode listed at
10:00in your description reflects the position in the ad-free episode - If a listener has a 30-second pre-roll ad, the playhead will be at
10:30in the episode when they tap the10:00chapter marker - The offset increases with each additional ad break.
